WHAT IS FORENSIC PSYCHOLOGY?
The "Specialty Guidelines for Forensic Psychologists" defines forensic psychology as "All forms of professional psychological conduct when acting as a psychological expert on explicitly psychological issues, in direct assistance to the courts, parties to legal proceedings, and administrative, judicial, and legislative agencies acting in an adjudicative capacity." In an essance, forensic psychology deals with both psychology and the law. The forensic psychologist needs to have a solid clinic background.
WHAT IS A FORENSIC PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION?
A Forensic Evaluation provides objective psychological evidence that is utilized in conjunction with the facts of a case to assist in psycho legal decision making. In addition to addressing specific legal issues, such as child custody, fitness for duty, competency to stand trial, etc, the forensic psychologist must be prepared to present findings and recommendations to attorneys as well as the Court.
WHY ARE FORENSIC PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATIONS REQUESTED?
The results of a forensic psychological evaluation are utilized to assist a decision maker, such as the Court system, attorney, insurance company, or an employer in determining an individual's mental status and how it may pertain to specific legal questions. Forensic evaluations are frequently requested in legal cases involving the best interests of children (child custody and relocation), claims covering injuries and trauma, and determination of mental competency.
